For Every Family: Your 3-Step Safety Plan
Talk through these simple but life-saving steps with your family!
1. Check Your Smoke Alarms ✅ A working smoke alarm is your family's first alert.
Test them monthly. Push the test button to make sure the alarm sounds.
Change the batteries at least once a year.
Replace all alarms every 10 years.
2. Create a Home Escape Plan 👨👩👧👦 Every second counts. Make sure everyone knows what to do and where to go.
Find two ways out of every single room.
Choose an outside meeting spot that's a safe distance from your home (like a specific tree, a light pole, or a neighbor's mailbox).
Practice your escape drill at least twice a year—once during the day and once at night.
3. Know What to Do If There's Smoke 💨
If you encounter smoke, get low and go under the smoke to the nearest exit.
Before opening a door, feel it with the back of your hand. If it's hot, use your second way out.
Once you are out, stay out! Never go back inside for any reason. Call for help from your safe meeting spot.
