For Every Family: Your 3-Step Safety Plan

Talk through these simple but life-saving steps with your family!

1. Check Your Smoke Alarms ✅ A working smoke alarm is your family's first alert.

  • Test them monthly. Push the test button to make sure the alarm sounds.

  • Change the batteries at least once a year.

  • Replace all alarms every 10 years.

2. Create a Home Escape Plan 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Every second counts. Make sure everyone knows what to do and where to go.

  • Find two ways out of every single room.

  • Choose an outside meeting spot that's a safe distance from your home (like a specific tree, a light pole, or a neighbor's mailbox).

  • Practice your escape drill at least twice a year—once during the day and once at night.

3. Know What to Do If There's Smoke 💨

  • If you encounter smoke, get low and go under the smoke to the nearest exit.

  • Before opening a door, feel it with the back of your hand. If it's hot, use your second way out.

  • Once you are out, stay out! Never go back inside for any reason. Call for help from your safe meeting spot.
